Ethyl Oleate

Ethyl oleate consists of ethyl esters of oleic acid and other related long-chain fatty acids; it may also contain suitable antioxidants. It presents as a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with good fluidity—an oily substance possessing a faint, characteristic odor, yet free from any rancid smell.
Ethyl oleate is primarily utilized as a solvent in certain intramuscular injection preparations; it is also employed in biodegradable microspheres intended for subcutaneous implantation, as well as in microemulsions of cyclosporine.
Ethyl oleate finds application in formulations for daily-use fragrances and food flavorings. It is widely utilized across various industries—including chemical manufacturing, textiles, and pharmaceuticals—serving principally as a lubricant, water-repellent agent, and resin toughener. Furthermore, it functions as an adjuvant in pesticide formulations, enhancing the penetration capabilities of the active ingredients. Ethyl oleate serves as a suitable solvent for steroids and other lipophilic drugs, exhibiting properties analogous to those of almond oil and peanut oil. However, in comparison to fixed oils, ethyl oleate possesses lower viscosity and is more readily and rapidly absorbed by body tissues. Consequently, it is frequently employed in the manufacture of injectable preparations, liniments, ointments, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
Ethyl oleate may also be utilized as a solvent for medications administered via subcutaneous injection.
Currently, while raw materials for ethyl oleate are abundant, manufacturers of standard-grade materials typically lack the specialized production and packaging facilities required for pharmaceutical products. During the manufacturing process, such facilities are prone to contamination by impurities—such as dust and particulate matter—thereby rendering the resulting raw material products incapable of meeting pharmacopoeial standards. Conversely, manufacturers of pharmaceutical-grade raw materials are scarce, and their products are in short supply; consequently, it has become increasingly difficult to satisfy the pharmaceutical industry's growing demand for pharmaceutical-grade ethyl oleate.
